John Reis and The Casbah
Thursday Jun 02, 2022
Thursday Jun 02, 2022
When Tim Mays started promoting shows, he used the somewhat obvious moniker “Tim Mays Presents.” That all changed in 1989 when he opened up the Casbah, a 75-capacity venue, in San Diego. Today, Mays is the owner of the new Casbah, holding more than 200 people, standing right down the road from the original location and famously at the very end of San Diego International Airport’s only runway.
Mays is joined by John Reis who performs under the equally obvious moniker “Swami John Reis.” As is the case with many San Diegan musicians, Reis has been part of multiple successful bands, most notably Rocket from the Crypt.
You don’t come from San Diego without having your own story, or stories in this case, of the Casbah. Join Tim Mays and The Swami as they talk through their memories of this storied room and the venue’s vital role in San Diego’s constantly evolving scene.

Stanton Moore and Tipitina’s
Tuesday Mar 01, 2022
Tuesday Mar 01, 2022
Tipitina’s has been a New Orleans stable since 1977. Described by some as the “Madison Square Garden of New Orleans,” the venue has fostered generations of New Orleans royalty including Ivan Neville, Dr. John, Professor Longhair, Big Freedia, and Trombone Shorty.
In 2018, Tipitina’s was facing imminent closure, when the news broke about new ownership: New Orleans funk superstars Galactic. Referring to themselves exclusively as “stewards” of the space, the band has infused renewed dignity, not only renovating the green rooms and installing new equipment, but rededicating the space to the vibrant New Orleans community that it supports.
Join Galactic drummer and Tipitina’s co-owner Stanton Moore as he sits down with General Manager Brian “Tank” Greenberg.

In its 37 years, the Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre in Detroit has hosted iconic artists such as Abbey Lincoln, Earth, Wind & Fire, Chaka Khan, Maxwell, Kendrick Lamar, and the Queen of Soul herself, Aretha Franklin. The venue was originally named the Chene Park Amphitheater, but when Aretha Franklin passed away in 2019, the city of Detroit renamed the stage in her honor.

Shahida herself is a native Detroiter and has produced pivotal historic and cultural events, with credits ranging from Nelson Mandela’s 1990 Tiger Stadium appearance to Kanye West’s Sunday Service in 2019.
Join today’s host, jazz saxophonist Mike Monford, as he chats with Shahida about The Aretha and what the venue means to the city of Detroit.

Tuesday Feb 01, 2022
Tuesday Feb 01, 2022
For the past 30 years, The Crocodile in Seattle has welcomed artists like Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Macklemore, and Lizzo, cementing its status as an iconic venue. In 2020, in the midst of an already devastating pandemic, the building owner refused to renew The Crocodile’s lease.
But extinction was never an option, and when a 30,000 square foot space became available just five blocks away, The Crocodile decided that it was time to evolve and even expand: Three stages, two bars, and a top-floor hotel.
Join our guest host, Hip Hop Artist Grieves, as he chats with Talent Buyer Hunter Motto to learn what it means to expand a legacy into a new space.

Butcher Brown and The Camel
Wednesday Dec 29, 2021
Wednesday Dec 29, 2021
Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, Butcher Brown interpolates jazz, hip-hop, funk, soul, and more into their distinct sonic signature. Hosted by multi-instrumentalist Marcus “Tennishu” Tenney and bassist Andrew Randazzo, this episode delves into the backstory of how the band met each other and The Camel venue owner Lucas Fritz at college, before becoming co-owner of the space in 2016, at the age of 26.
Lucas Fritz, co-owner of The Camel and its sister venue The Broadberry, first began working at The Camel as an intern in 2009, starting with booking bi-weekly VCU jazz showcases. It was at that VCU jazz program that Fritz befriended and began booking the future members of Butcher Brown, a bond strengthened through their respective work at The Camel.

Rudy Love Jr. and WAVE
Monday Nov 22, 2021
Monday Nov 22, 2021
The town of Wichita would look wildly different without the contributions of two venue owners and promoters named Adam and Jessie Hartke. Their work has imbued Wichita with a verve and vibrance that has permanently altered the town and musicians that call the two family.
Today’s episode is a story of two prolific songwriters from the literal and metaphorical heart of America, both by the name of Rudy Love.
Rudy Love Sr. was on tour with Little Richard at 18, a prelude to his masterful future work with Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, and The Temptations. Rudy Sr. called the town of Wichita, Kansas home until his passing this past October, leaving his son, Rudy Love Jr. to take over the family legacy.
A brilliant songwriter in his own regard, Rudy Jr. has shared the stage with Snoop Dogg, George Clinton, and the band Kansas among many others. But more than anything, the two Rudys’ dedication to Wichita and passion for developing its music community is felt in every corner of the city. This very presence once led the younger of the two to the doorstep of a community organizer and concert promoter by the name of Adam Hartke. The rest of the story is best left for them to tell.

Schoolly D and The Fire
Wednesday Aug 11, 2021
Wednesday Aug 11, 2021
With a string of hits out of West Philly, legendary MC Schoolly D laid the foundation for West Coast rappers like Ice-T and the gangsta rap movement that shook the world. Following his success in the 80s, Schoolly built his very own loft “Batcave” in the Northern Liberties neighborhood of Philadelphia; right around the corner from a venue now known as The Fire.
Then known as The Philadelphia Bar & Grill, The Fire didn’t start promoting concerts until 1999, when owner and voice teacher Karen Saillant (Sigh-aunt) took the reins from her husband, Bernie. For Schoolly and his young daughter Jordan, The Fire quickly became a second home. The venue became a hotspot, hosting acts like Maroon 5, John Legend, and My Chemical Romance early in their careers. This is in addition to housing Karen’s opera teaching practice. The Fire is also the only woman-owned music venue in the city of Philadelphia.
Join our guest host, Jordan Weaver, as she sits down with her dad Schoolly D and her former music teacher, The Fire owner Karen Saillant, as they explore the history behind The Fire and how this venue became a safe space for musical exploration.
